The creation of the Principality brought quite a number of internal and external problems. Nevertheless, within a hundred years Liechtenstein, despite upheavals and wars, was able to strengthen and develop its institutions.
The internal situation remained more or less quiet, while the influence of the princes, especially Johann I grew. Thus the newcomer on the European stage was able to retain its position in a time of unrest. Although the great wave of the French Revolution had no influence within the country, as it remained an absolute monarchy, the Napoleonic wars, ending the feudal structure of the Holy Roman Empire, actually made Liechtenstein into a free and sovereign state.
Napoleon had respected Liechtenstein’s independence, and this was confirmed by the Congress of Vienna, although many other states were then abolished.
